Abstract

This article is devoted to the study of the pedagogical and socio-politicallegacy of MustaqymMaldybaev (1887–1937), one of the lesser-knownrepresentatives of the Kazakh national intelligentsia of the early20thcentury. Unlike the more prominentfigures of the Alashmovement, his name is rarelymentioned in generalizingstudies, whichmakes an appeal to hisactivitiesparticularlysignificant for understanding the processes of national revival. The paperanalyzes the main stages of Maldybaev’slife and work, including iscontribution to the formation of the national school, hispedagogicalpractice at the Mamani School and the Semipalatinsk Teacher’sSeminary, the creation of the first textbooks for Kazakh children, as well ashisactiveparticipation in public and culturalorganizations. Specialattention is paid to hisrole in the development of national literacy, the organization of educationalinstitutions, and the promotion of culturalinitiatives. Hiscontribution to the Alashmovement is alsohighlighted, both in the sphere of educational and ideologicalenlightenment and in the politicalfield, includinghisparticipation in congresses, the establishment of zemstvoinstitutions and national committees, as well as the organization of the armedforces of the AlashOrda. Based on the analysis of archivaldocuments, memoirs, journalism, and modernhistoriography, the studyshows that Maldybaevwas one of the key figures in the modernization of Kazakh society, combiningtraditions of Eastern education with European pedagogicalapproaches. The findingsallowus to regardhis name as an integralpart of the history of national education and culturalrevival in Kazakhstan.
