Abstract

The problems of creating a high-quality urban environment in modern
conditions are relevant for both large megacities and small towns and urban settlements. In the
conditions of rapid development of urbanisation and increase in the share of urban population,
public spaces are considered as a important element of the urban planning system and the basis
for the formation of urban environment. The article provides a theoretical analysis of the
problems, practices and current trends in the creation and modernisation of public urban spaces
based on examples of domestic and international experience. The study of this topic allows us to
identify the basic principles and requirements for the creation and development of the system
that ensures the effective functioning of urban public spaces.
Open public spaces on the urban territory – city squares, parks, embankments, natural
landscapes, territories in front of residential complexes contribute not only to the socio-cultural,
but also to the economic development of the city. Public space, as an important element of urban
development, plays a significant role in shaping the city’s cohesive socio-cultural structure,
which highlights the relevance of this research. The article analyses the significance of urban
public spaces, classifies them according to various features, and identifies the main features of
the design of public areas. The classification of urban public spaces revealed their social
significance. Through socially significant objects in the highly urbanised urban environment a
system analysis of public transport stops has been carried out. Public transport stops are
important as open public spaces capable of bringing changes in the processes of city life. This
requires the introduction of new approaches and methods to their creation, maintenance and
modernisation.
