Objective – to investigate the characteristics of sheep wool within the system of knowledge and skills of traditional crafts related to the intangible cultural heritage of Kazakhstan, as well as to clarify certain concepts in this field of study. Methods – analytical and comparative-historical methods were employed, enabling a comprehensive examination of materials related to sheep wool. Results – the specific properties of sheep wool and its beneficial effects on the human body were identified, differences between its “shaiyr” (fatty coating) and “shuashem” (specific odor of the fatty coating) were analyzed, and an original interpretation of the concept of “shuash” was provided. Conclusion – sheep wool has significant potential for preserving and developing intangible cultural heritage, and its further promotion is possible through integration with folk crafts, ethno-design, fashion, tourism, agriculture, and education.
